Search engines are used to for looking for documents. They compile their databases by employing "spiders" or "robots" to crawl through web space from link to link, identifying and perusing pages. 2 types: individual and meta Provides access to a fairly large portion of the publicity available. The number of responses you can get from the search that you do no want. You can get lengthy documents that only have your search word once.

Search engines are not all the same. Their size, speed, content, ranking schemes, and search options vary. Its goal is to return the most relevant pages at the top of their list. Examples: Google, Yahoo, Kayak, Bing, etc.

Boolean Operators are how a person can make their search more specific by using words like “AND”, “OR” and “NOT”. Boolean Operators! Boolean “OR” >>>> allows you to receive more documents where either or both keywords appear Boolean “NOT/“AND NOT“ >>>> retrieving only the first key word you enter Boolean “AND“ >>>> Narrows it down by retrieving every key word you enter

Be specific, whenever possible, use nouns and objects as keywords Put most important terms first in your keyword list to ensure that they will be searched Put a +sign in front of each one Use at least three keywords in your query Combine keywords, whenever possible, into phrases Avoid common words, unless they’re part of a phrase Think about words you’d expect to find in the body of the page and use them as keywords
