8 Europe goes to war  1936 German troops move to Rhineland – Borders France & Belguim  Hitler & Muss. Form AXIS POWERS – Japan  Conquered Austria, Studenland, Czech.  France & Britain pledged support to Poland.  2 months later Germany invaded Poland. France & Britain declare war on Germany.

9 The Nazi Party  1936-Nazi party official party of Germany.  Established Gestapo & SS – Above the law.  Coordinated attacks on Jews  Kristallnacht – Night of Broken Glass – 7500 Businesses destroyed – 267 Synagogues burned – 91 Jews killed.

10 The War  1938 – Germany unites with Austria Together they invade Sudetenland (Czechoslovakia) 1939 – Germany, Italy, & Soviets unite for the common good of the Third Reicht. Poland & Britain sign Mutual Assistance Treaty. 1939 – Sept. Nazis invade Poland.

11 The War…1940  Britain, France, Australia, & New Zealand declare war on Nazis.  U.S.A. remains neutral.  Soviets attack Finland.  Germany attacks Scotland  Nazis invade Denmark, Norway, France, Belgium, Luxemburg, Holland, &Netherlands.

12 1940 continued  Soviets attack Lithuania, Latvia, &Estonia.  Italians occupy Somalia in North Africa & invades Egypt & Greece.  German Blitz against England.

13 1941  Nazis order Jews to wear Yellow Stars  Germany turns on Soviets.  Lend-Lease Act – authorized President to aid any nation vital to US  Dec. 7, 1941 - Japan bombs Pearl Harbor.  U.S.A. enters the war.

14 Deportation  1942 – First of mass murders at Auschwitz.  100 camps.  Men, Women, & Children.  Labor Camps  All across Europe.

15 1943  Soviets join Allied forces.  Nazis surrender at Stalingrad.  German and Italian troops surrender in North Africa.  Italian surrender is announced.

16 1944  900 day siege on Leningrad over.  June 4 -D-Day landings.  August – Paris Liberation.  1 st liberation of Concentration Camps.

17 1945  German troops retreat.  Liberation of more camps.  Hitler commits suicide.  Mussolini hanged  Nuremburg Trials begin.
