DNA Tim Goudemont

What is DNA DNA is a long molecule that contains our unique genetic code. Like a recipe book it holds the instructions for making all the proteins in our bodies.   Tip: DNA is made up of nucleotides.

How does the structure of DNA work?
Phosphate Adenine Purines Guanine Sugar Bases Thimine Cytosine HO Pyrimidines The nucleotides are connected in long strands. Each strand has a sugar phosphate backbone. Two DNA strands are connected together by bases bonding with each other. Cytosine always pairs with Guanine and Adenine always pairs with Thimine. This type of Pairing is called complementary base pairing. There is a picture on the next page

How is DNA copied? DNA is copied when enzymes separate the two strands. Then other enzymes add complimentary nucleotides to the unprotected strands What I noticed: I noticed that the Enzymes are like a zipper. They Separate the two strands.

What is a Gene (Genes)? Genes are really important parts of DNA. Genes tell what personality you have or what gender you are. Once again Genes are parts of DNA but that code for a protein made of amino acids). The bases act like letters that make the instructions for how to make a protein. The rule is there has to be 3 bases to stand for 1 amino acid.
