Beamline 8.3.2 Radiation Shielding Beamline Design Review 17 April, 2006

Background Radiation leak discovered during annual white-light survey Surgical inspection revealed that: – Lead had shifted slightly – Corner section was not built to specification Actions taken: – All lead lined hutches are to be inspected and reviewed – All lead lined hutches moved to Pre-Commissioned status

Shielding Inspection Criteria Verify that lead shielding is either: – Contiguous – Properly overlapped Ensure that shielding is secure and will not move Document and Archive

Shielding Defining Process Determine types of panels and shielding – Exploratory surgery – Compare to mfg drawings Develop repair plan: – Procedure for panel repair – Process for documentation

Shielding panel types Three types of shielding panels on the hutch: –Structural (S) –Non-Structural (NS) –Corners (C) Additional regions –Doors –Support Structure over door X-rays PLAN VIEW S NS C C C C S S

Shielding Repair Approach Documentation – Generate tracking methods for each panel – Record panel information and repairs – Archive documents, drawings and photos. Three basic shielding repair “actions” to hutch panels: – Skinning (structural & corners) – Securing (non-structural & doors) – Surveying (roof, H – panels, labyrinths)

8.3.2 Shielding Documentation Documentation note – Includes explanation – Defines numbering system for panels and references drawing – Provides repair forms for each panel – Will serve to record repairs with forms and photos.

“Skinning” Example documentation Corner Panels – Fill out inspection sheet – Photograph lead – Re-skin with 5mm lead – Cover with steel

“Skinning” Example documentation 2 Door Support Structure – Fill out inspection sheet – Re-skin with 5mm lead – Photograph before install – Cover with steel

“Securing” repair process Non Structural Panels – Inspect Lead – Photograph Overall Picture Quadrants – Install Support Bar – Install Cover Plate

“Securing” Inspection A B C D

“Securing” Support bar

“Securing” Assembly view

“Securing” Attachment view

“Securing” Example Documentation 2 Doors – Remove doors – Cut into and Inspect lead – Photograph – Install Support Bars – Install Cover Plate – Re-install doors

“Surveying” Repair process Survey panels – Roof panels – H - panels – Labyrinths Survey Process – Inspect panels – Perform commissioning survey per procedure – Complete forms

“Surveying” Commissioning checklist

“Surveying” Example documentation Roof panels – Inspect panels – Perform commissioning survey per procedure – Complete forms

Open issues….. Complete documentation note with deails, process for repair and drawings for each panel on hutch Review of Commissioning radiation survey procedure – All concerns must be addressed regarding actual process. Structural Calculations – INC is reviewing hutch design with added lead – If additional structure is needed a design could be added to the corners

Plan of Attack Immediate Actions: –Non-Structural Panels Inspect/Repair/Secure –Doors Remove Inspect/Repair/Secure –Labyrinths Remove/Inspect –Roof Cover Plates Fabricate Lead Inspect/Install –Inspect C-Channels on Joining Plates Near Term Actions –Structural Calculations –Re-Skin Structural Panels Door Support Structure Corners During Re-Commissioning –Verify H-Channels on Joining Plates –Survey All Panels

Questions?

Panels to be “Skinned”
