Dependence/Addiction Definition – the physical(body) or psychological (mind) craving for a drug Characteristics of Addiction Varies in the amount of time it takes for a person to become addicted – could be very first usage Varies with each person’s personality Withdrawal symptoms occur if the person stops usage

Dependence/Addiction Tolerance develops – need more and more of the drug for the same effect Lack of control of drug usage – doesn’t matter what is happening-need the drug in the body to function Social, physical and financial problems begin to occur

Why drugs effect people differently Physical differences in body chemistry, body type Tolerance levels are varied Body weight varies Food in stomach effects the reaction to the drug Emotional state of each person is different

Marijuana Laws vary from state to state – misdemeanor with a small fine to criminal charges with jail time Requests for use medically – glaucoma Marijuana smoke has more cancer causing substances than cigarette smoke
