Look at Research@UWW to find books, articles, and much more Research@UWW
6
What is Research@UWW? The place to begin your search for articles, books, ebooks, government documents, media, reserves, images, guides, and more. Similar to a database in that it contains citations that sometimes lead to full text. Simultaneously searches: Most of the library’s article, ebook, and other databases The library’s physical books, videos, etc. Reserves Course Guides
7
Look in individual Andersen Library databases to find articles
8
What is a database? An database is an online index of citations, sometimes containing the complete text of articles and other materials, too. Examples: Academic Search Complete JSTOR / Project Muse Sage Premier Journals
9
How to Find What You Want 1. Thesis statement(s), issues, questions 2. Brainstorm synonyms 3. Formulate search strategy 4. Types of sources needed? 5. Find appropriate index 6. Conduct searches 7. Find information 8. Evaluate 9. Read & Synthesize 10. Cite

Tips to Save You Time: Find Info Fast
11
Thesis Statement, Issue, Question Is it true that lithium in the water supply, even in small doses, makes people happier?
12
lithiumwater supplyhappy metallic elements water systemglad drinking waterblissful reservoirjoyful mood BRAINSTORM
13
Keyword Tip #1: Use AND AND ◦ Use to connect different concepts ◦ Both concepts will be in the results ◦ Narrows search (finds fewer, more on target results) lithium Finds=45 lithium AND mood Finds=2
14
Keyword Tip #2: Use OR OR ◦ Use to connect similar concepts ◦ At least one term will be in the results ◦ Broadens search (finds more results, is more thorough) ◦ Saves time by doing several searches in one mood Finds=440 mood OR happy OR glad Finds=1,395
15
Keyword Tip #3: Phrases Quotation Marks “ ” ◦ Use when words often or always occur in a specific order ◦ All words inside the quotes will be in the results, in the exact order used ◦ Narrows search (finds fewer, more on target results) water AND supply Finds=1,849 “water supply” Finds=1,780
16
Keyword Tip #4: Use Truncation Truncation ◦ Use to find various endings of a word ◦ Place symbol at the end of the root word ◦ Broadens search (finds more results) ◦ Symbol varies amongst databases ◦ Be careful of placement! mood* = mood, moods, moody, & 12 words that mostly have to do with water cat* = cat, cats, catatonic, catalytic, catastrophic, & 250 other words that have nothing to do with cats (a better search would be cat OR cats)
17
Keyword Tip #5: Combinations Nesting in Databases ◦ Use to assure search runs correctly when using both ANDs & ORs ◦ Like in algebraic equations ◦ Place OR phrase in parentheses (mood* OR happ*) AND lithium
