Large low-pressure system approached the U.S. East Coast on May 24, 2001, bringing with it forecasts of rain through Memorial Day weekend. The smoke plume from a large fire northeast of Steinhatchee, Florida, is also visible to the lower right.

For most people the real difference in their lives, because of the type of front, is the weather. COLD fronts cause hours of rough weather, and thunder storms. WARM fronts cause days of soft rain, and wealth for hard pressed farmers.

West side of Rockies have lots of trees, East side is a desert of sorts. The wind that hits you, on the East side of the Rockies, is a Chinook.

Stratus ~ sheet-like, or layered Nimbo ~ means “rain” Alto ~ means “middle altitude” Cumulus ~ “piled” or “heaped” or “puffy” Cirro ~ means high. They are often “feathery” or “wispy”
