Chapter 23 Final Phases © 2006 Fairchild Publications, Inc. 10 Electrical Plan

Chapter 23 Final Phases © 2006 Fairchild Publications, Inc. 11 Reflected Ceiling Plans Location of: –Luminaires (location dimensioned) –Architectural elements –Switches –Control loops –Ceiling materials –Changes in ceiling heights

Chapter 23 Final Phases © 2006 Fairchild Publications, Inc. 12 Reflected Ceiling Plans Other possible items: –Ceiling tiles –Partitions –Heating supply air ducts –Diffusers –Exposed beams –Columns –Speakers –Skylights –Cornices, coves, soffits –Sprinkler heads –Emergency lights –Signage

Chapter 23 Final Phases © 2006 Fairchild Publications, Inc. 13 Reflected Ceiling Plan

Chapter 23 Final Phases © 2006 Fairchild Publications, Inc. 14 Sections and Elevations Vertical location of wall luminaires, switches, outlets, windows, and doors Sectional views helpful: –Analyzing light distribution patterns –Location of floor-mounted luminaires –Mechanical or electrical elements in ceiling cavities

Chapter 23 Final Phases © 2006 Fairchild Publications, Inc. 15 Specifications Prevail over cross-referenced details in drawings Resource for writing lighting specifications: –The International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD) manual, Guidelines for Specification Integrity (2002) –Topics include: Building a foundation for specifying Processes in the design, construction document, bidding, and construction phases Specification approaches and languages

Chapter 23 Final Phases © 2006 Fairchild Publications, Inc. 16 Specifications Specifications address the areas of: –General –Products –Execution General: –Overall requirements of lighting specifications –Complying with codes, laws, and reference standards Product: –Detailed written description of elements of a lighting system

Chapter 23 Final Phases © 2006 Fairchild Publications, Inc. 17 Specifications Product: –Open specifications: Indicate that product substitutions must be equal to description provided in document –Closed specifications: Very specific product, manufacturer, and requirements Substitutes are not allowed without approval Execution section: –Describes installation methods, testing procedures, and maintenance provisions

Specification formats –Proprietary This is the most common Just list what you want to buy – MFR’s will help Can allow for equals based on your approval Three parts: General, Materials, and Execution Often use a Master that you edit for your projectMaster –Performance List criteria for finish level, VOC emission, resilience, appearance, whatever Contractor presents options for your approval –Reference Give a standard, such as ASTM, for the product Contractor presents options for your approval

Chapter 23 Final Phases © 2006 Fairchild Publications, Inc. 19 Contract Administration Contracts initiate construction phase of project Designer prepares contracts with clients, manufacturers, suppliers, fabricators, vendors, independent contractors, and craftsperson Some projects may require bidding and contracts through contractors, architects, or electrical contractors

Chapter 23 Final Phases © 2006 Fairchild Publications, Inc. 20 Contract Administration Possible activities in construction phase: –Reviewing documents –Purchasing products –Project management –Monitoring costs –Site supervision Important to good service is consistent and informative communication

Chapter 23 Final Phases © 2006 Fairchild Publications, Inc. 21 Contract Administration Site supervision during construction and installations conducted in accordance to local laws and regulations Monitoring work can reinforce importance of a quality installation

Chapter 23 Final Phases © 2006 Fairchild Publications, Inc. 22 Contract Administration Installation process includes: –Aiming, focusing, and calibrating controls –Commissioning done with contractor After installation can assist with scheduling move-in and on-site supervision

Chapter 23 Final Phases © 2006 Fairchild Publications, Inc. 23 Postoccupancy Evaluation (POE) Purposes of POE: –Assess effectiveness of lighting design –Determine how well design accommodates goals of project –Conduct modifications whenever possible –Assure end-users are acquainted with proper operation of lighting system –Acquire information that can be used to improve future projects –Build positive customer relations

Chapter 23 Final Phases © 2006 Fairchild Publications, Inc. 24 Postoccupancy Evaluation (POE) Conducted at various intervals after move-in: –Visit site within first 3 months after move-in –Six months later –At least one year later After two years demonstrates a commitment to integrity of design and can lead to new work

For Monday Review for the mid-term I’ll have questions Bring yours, too – what do you think would be a good exam question?
