Spreadsheets and Marks © Nipawin School Division 2003

Spreadsheets – Data Entry and Marks A spreadsheet is a program which allows you to enter words, numbers and formulas into the program so that you can change one and watch the effect on the others. For example if you borrow $1000, you might want to see how much interest you will pay over five years or over three years. The spreadsheet will allow you to do this.

Spreadsheets – Data Entry and Marks To start the spreadsheet, go to START Choose PROGRAMS Look for Microsoft Excel Other spreadsheet programs will probably look the same but have different commands In this tutorial I refer to Excel since it is the one common to all schools in the division

Spreadsheets – Data Entry and Marks The spreadsheet screen is divided into a grid with letters designating the columns and numbers designation the words. Each box is called a cell. You are looking at only a small portion of the whole spreadsheet, the upper right hand corner top be exact. To move around in the spreadsheet you can use the usual keys (Arrow keys, page up, page down) or you can also use the EDIT menu and the Goto option.

Spreadsheets – Data Entry and Marks To enter words or numbers: Position your cursor in the cell you are going to enter the information into. Type in the letters or numbers

Spreadsheets – Data Entry and Marks To enter a simple formula: Position your cursor in an empty cell Type the = sign enter the cell reference you want (A2) enter the mathematical operator you want (+ - * /) enter another cell reference (B3) press enter Instead of the typing being visible only the answer will be visible. Even more important, if you change one of the original cells the formula will automatically recalculate and put the new answer in the cell.

Spreadsheets – Data Entry and Marks If you feel confident, test yourself by doing the following: Enter the spreadsheet listed below Make sure that you enter a formula that gets the totals for each student and for each test Divide the class totals to get a class average Divide the individual totals by the total of the tests to get a decimal average save it on your H: drive as MARX1 COOL SCHOOL MARKS Test Total 20 30 40 Harry Hairball 12 14 15 Harriet Hairball 22 3 5 Hezekiah Hairball 2 6 4 Jack Jerk 7 8 9 John Jerk 23 23 0 Judy Jerk 10 23 2 Jody Jerk 14 13 12 Jean Jerk 16 17 1 Joan Jerk 12 1 2 Class Totals
