K REBS C YCLE Citric Acid Cycle
2
B EFORE THE CYCLE BEGINS : ► Pyruvate turned into acetate gives off CO 2 and causes NAD+ NADH ► Coenzyme A attaches to acetate acetyl CoA
3
K REBS C YCLE In the mitochondrial matrix. Acetyl CoA combines with Oxaloacetate (4-C acid) to make Citrate (6-C acid) Coenzyme A released. Enzymes rearrange 6-C acid to make 5-C acid. This releases CO 2 and turns NAD+ to NADH Enzymes change 5-C acid to a 4-C acid. CO 2 is released and more NADH is formed
4
Enzymes rearrange 4-C acid twice. Makes one ATP and one FADH 2. ATP if formed with help of GTP (GDP GTP.) Enzymes convert 4-C acid into oxaloacetate. NADH is formed. Cycle repeats
6
R ESULTS : 2 molecules of CO 2 are released 3 molecules of NAD+ are converted to 3NADH 1 molecule of ADP is converted to ATP with the help of GTP FAD is converted to FADH2 Remember: 2 molecules of pyruvate from glycolysis so multiply above results by 2
