Finds a GLOBE Soil Moisture Site
2
This is Mr. Carney. He is a GLOBE teacher. Mr. Carney really likes science, but his favorite thing is mud. Since he likes mud and dirt so much, one day he decided to take some of his students to find a GLOBE Soil Moisture Study Site.
3
Most of the time, Mr. Carney knows exactly what he’s doing. But once in a while he gets confused. When that happens, his students try to help him out. He had a LOT of trouble picking a Soil Moisture Study Site!
4
The first place Mr. Carney and his students thought they could set up their Soil Moisture Study Site was in the flower garden.
5
“No Mr. Carney! The flower garden won’t work. You need to find a place that doesn’t get watered by hoses or sprinklers!”
6
Then Mr. Carney and his kids thought the sidewalk might be an interesting place for the Soil Moisture Study Site. It didn’t take them long to figure out that it would be impossible to get soil from the sidewalk!
7
They should have known from the trouble with the sidewalk that the basketball court wouldn’t be a good place for the Soil Moisture Study Site, but they had to try it out, just to be sure.
8
Their next stop was the dumpster.
9
“Mr. Carney! You can’t get your soil from the dumpster!”
10
Mr. Carney thought that if he couldn’t use the flower garden, the sidewalk or the dumpster, maybe the playground would be a good place for the Soil Moisture Study Site.
11
Then the sprinklers came on and he remembered not to study soil that gets watered.
12
Mr. Carney and his students were getting a little hot and tired. A shady place next to the classroom seemed like the perfect spot for the Soil Moisture Study Site.
13
“Mr. Carney! Everyone knows that your Soil Moisture Study Site can’t be right next to a building.
14
They decided that if they couldn’t get their soil in the shade next to the classroom, they would get some from under a tree.
15
“Mr. Carney! You can’t set up our Soil Moisture Study Site in the shade of a building OR in the shade of a tree. It can’t be in the shade at all!
16
Finally! Mr. Carney and his students pick the perfect spot for their GLOBE Soil Moisture Study Site. It’s perfect because it’s not in the shade or an area that is irrigated.
17
It’s perfect because it is right near the GLOBE weather station.
18
It’s perfect because it’s not in the shade or an area that is irrigated.
19
Now Mr. Carney’s students can start collecting GLOBE soil data and help scientists understand the earth just a little bit.
