INTRO TO FRACTIONS SWBAT IDENTIFY THE PARTS OF A FRACTION. SWBAT FIND A COMMON DENOMINATOR FOR 2 FRACTIONS. SWBAT CHANGE MIXED NUMBERS INTO IMPROPER FRACTIONS.
2
WARM UP 1.Find the prime factorization of 60. 2.Kenya placed 21 apples and 28 oranges into different bowls. Each bowl held the same amount of fruit and contained only apples or oranges. What is the greatest number of pieces of fruit Kenya could have placed in each bowl? 3.Amir wants to buy a new MP3 player that costs $76.50. If he saves $8.50 each week, how many weeks will it take him to save enough to buy the MP3 player.
3
IMPORTANT VOCAB Numerator Denominator
4
SIMPLIFYING FRACTIONS You can simplify a fraction by dividing the numerator and the denominator by the same whole number (a common factor).
5
EQUIVALENT FRACTIONS Fractions that have the same value. Ex: ½ = 2/4
6
MIXED NUMBERS Mixed numbers have a whole number AND a fraction. Ex: 2 ½ Mixed numbers represent numbers greater than 1.
7
IMPROPER FRACTIONS Improper fractions have a numerator that is greater than the denominator. Improper fractions represent numbers greater than 1. Ex: 8/5
8
SWITCHING BETWEEN THE TWO To change an improper fraction into a mixed number: DIVIDE. To change a mixed number into an improper fraction: Use the circle trick. Ex: 2 ¾ 2 x 4 + 3= 11. Keep denominator 11/4
9
IMPROPER FRACTION TO MIXED NUMBER Divide Practice 1. 9/22. 7/33. 10/5
10
MIXED NUMBERS TO IMPROPER FRACTIONS The circle trick Multiply the denominator with the whole number. Add the numerator to the product. The sum is the new numerator, keep the same denominator. ***IMPORTANT FOR EOG*** Practice 1. 1 ¾ 2. 4 2/4 3. 5 3/8
11
EXIT TICKET 1.Give a fraction equivalent to 3/5. 2.Simplify: 8/12 3.Make 3 ½ into an improper fraction.
