The Magic One
8
What fraction (part) of this hexagon is red? If you said, "All of it." You are right... But, your answer isn't a fraction.
9
Improper Fraction
10
Actually, there's nothing improper about them... It's just when the numerator is bigger then the denominator. Like So, let's see what this means. Let's looks at a hexagon... That's 7 pieces... Hey, this is just !
11
How about ? So, let's compute : 9 goes into 11 once with 2 left over and here's how we write it all See how we stick the original denominator under the 2 ?
12
Let's change to an improper fraction. So, How to change MIXED NUMBER to Improper Fraction…
13
Adding Fractions When the Denominators are the Same
17
So
18
Let's do one without pictures: Easy!
19
Adding Fractions When the Denominators are Different
20
Let's try this: The main rule of this game is that we can't do anything until the denominators are the same! We need to find something called the least common denominator (LCD)... It's really just the LCM of our denominators, 2 and 3. The LCM of 2 and 3 is 6. So, our LCD 6. We need to make this our new denominator... Change the : Change the : Now we can do it!
21
What is LCD??
22
Multiplying Fractions
23
Let's just do one: We just multiply straight across... Reduce it!! Make it simplest!!!
24
Let’s do this!!! is already a fraction... But, what about the 6 ? Guess what? We can write 6 as. Think about it: is the same as... which is 6! (You can do this with any number!) Back to the problem:
25
Let's change to an improper fraction. What about this?
26
What about this?

Dividing Fractions
28
There's a really cool trick for these... “FLIP and MULTIPLY!” Check it out:

What about this? Reduce it!! Make it simplest!!!

How about another one?
