Locke in Your Rights 0 John Locke: Author of Second Treatise on Government (1689) 0 Coined the term “Natural Rights” 0 Rights that every human has from their birth. 0 Right to happiness, life, freedom etc. 0 Why would the founders follow him?

Calvin and (Thomas) Hobbes 0 Thomas Hobbes: Authored The Leviathan(1651) 0 Held the belief that people in a nutshell were stupid… 0 Well intentioned, but stupid. 0 Citizens need a strong leader to tell them what to do. 0 Given the chance, they will mess up society. 0 In nature…“no society; and which is worst of all, continual fear, and danger of violent death; and the life of man, solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short.”

All in the Fine Print.. 0 Social Contact: An agreement among a society in order to cooperate for social benefits. 0 Locke: People give up the right to enact justice in exchange for life, liberty and gain the right to impartial protection of property. 0 Monopoly on violence.

Hobbes says… 0 Hobbes: Do as your told, and the leaders will not kill you. No matter what the leader does, they have not violated the contract. 0 Castle on the hill vs. the straw topped houses.
