1.Thesis statement (th) = 1 point 2.Addressing both continuity and change (add)-4 checks! = 1 point 3.Evidence = facts (e) -4 checks! = 1 point 4.Global Context (gc)-4 checks! = 1 point 5.Analysis (ana)-4 checks! = 1 point

I.Introduction paragraph with thesis II.Addresses Change #1 a. Evidence for Change #1 b. Global Context for Change #1 c. Analysis for Change #1 *repeat for Change #2 and Continuity #1 and #2-conclusion wraps it up!

Clear thesis statement: must mention the changes and continuities that you’re going to discuss, the region and the time period. Example:During the time period of 650 CE to 1750 CE, commerce in the Indian Ocean changed in two significant ways. New trade routes allowed Europeans to sail through the Indian Ocean to India without the need for Muslim intermediaries, and trading post empires were created in the Indian Ocean. Although commerce in the Indian Ocean did change, the intense European interest in Asian commodities and desire to control trade routes in order to gain power remained.

You have to explicitly state what changes or what continued in the topic sentence of each paragraph You should have 1 sentence at the start of each paragraph that addresses one of the 2 changes and 2 continuities; that means you have to have 4 addresses statements, 1 per paragraph! Example: Use of the Silk Road increased in both the Middle East and China as a result of Mongol rule.

During the beginning of the time span, products such as spices from India and gold from Africa were prominent along the trade routes. These products have continued to be traded as seen by the continuance of the trading posts that were set up by the Portuguese in Maluku, which is later conquered by the Dutch. This COULD’VE become “evidence” also…

These are historical facts that you are using in your argument to prove that something has changed or continued Must have 4 of these to get the point- that means 1 per paragraph!

During the beginning of the time span, products such as spices from India and gold from Africa continued to be traded along the trade routes. These products have continued to be traded as seen by the continuance of the trading posts that were set up by the Portuguese in Maluku, which is later conquered by the Dutch. Sentence 1 = addresses continuity then sentence 2 = evidence because you can’t have one sentence count for 2 requirements-that’s called DOUBLE DIPPING and AP readers can’t do it so write more!!

Must have 4 in your paper to get this point-that is, 1 per paragraph! This statement explains what’s happening globally and how it effects the region(s) you’re talking about during the time you’re discussing

The globe saw the need to take part in the Indian Ocean trade network. Silver from the Americas as well as from Japan was seen in the Indian Ocean. Products from the Americas and Europe diffused through Asia by using the Indian Ocean. The Indian Ocean helped aid the world by bringing new cultures and foods to help populations grow and become healthier.

1.This is the “because” statement-you use the word “because” to explain WHY a change or a continuity happened 2.You must have 4 of these in your paper to get the point-that is 1 per paragraph!

Portuguese were able to travel to the Indian Ocean because of sailing technology, such as better sails and the astrolabe, as well as support from the royal family, notably Henry the Navigator, an explorer himself.
