5. Terminology and Settings What does LRE mean? What does inclusion mean? What is your role in an inclusive setting? What is the difference between mainstreaming and inclusion? What are self-contained classrooms? 5

6. Inclusion and its success Principal, regular education, and special education staff share in caring for needs of students with special needs. Inclusion specialist can work with the regular education teacher to make inclusion successful. Paraprofessional can be assigned to help the student in an inclusive setting. Work can be modified to help student succeed. (Children’s Advocate, 2003). 6

7. What must be done? Time must be allowed for teacher training and collaboration efforts. Students need to be educated about disabilities Understand and identify the LRE for each student. Learned helplessness is the excessive dependency, often induced by well-meaning caregivers or parents because they cannot bear to see the child struggle or feel they do not have the time to let the child work at learning a particular self-help task.
