French & Indian War (1754-60) British gained French territory in North America. War costs and defending new territory indebted Britain. British Parliament (legislature) taxed the colonies.

Revolutionary War 1775: Battle of Lexington & Concord. France & Spain joined the Americans. 1781: British surrendered at Yorktown.

Early U.S. Gov’t 1783-87 Confederation: loose union of states with a weak central gov’t. Ineffective & soon abandoned.

Constitution 1787 Federal System: Split between national & state gov’ts. Republic: elected leaders. Bill of Rights: protecting natural rights. Closer to true democracy than most western nations at the time.
