4 Structure the Interview Base questions on actual job duties Use job knowledge, situational or behavioral questions Avoid irrelevant or potentially discriminatory questions Use same questions with all candidates

5 Structure the Interview Use rating scales to rate answers Use multiple interviewers to reduce bias Use structured interview form or list questions in advance Take brief notes during interview to avoid “recency effect”

6 The RIGHT Questions Ask open-ended questions Listen and encourage candidate to express thoughts fully Draw out opinions and feelings Ask for examples

7 The WRONG Questions Don’t ask “Yes” or “No” questions Don’t put words in candidate’s mouth Don’t interrogate, and avoid being patronizing, sarcastic, or inattentive Don’t monopolize interview or allow candidate to dominate
