II ii 79-88 Romeo Juliet Romeo comments that the Capulets present no danger to him because of Juliet’s love. He comments that he would rather die knowing that Juliet loves him than live another moment unsure of her love. 2. Juliet explains that Romeo should not swear his love to her because it is too sudden, like lightning, and could disappear just as quickly. She explains that perhaps by summer the bud of their relationship will develop into a beautiful flower.

II iii 70-86 Friar Romeo The Friar expresses surprise at Romeo’s sudden change of heart and suggests that he was never truly in love in the first place saying, “Young men’s love then lies / Not truly in their hearts but in their eyes.” 4. 95-100 The Friar comments that Rosaline realized that Romeo does not know what true love is. He goes on to explain that he will perform the marriage between Romeo and Juliet because he believes it will end the fighting and hatred between their families.

III ii 79-91 Juliet Nurse Juliet uses a series of opposite terms (like “fiend angelical”) to describe Romeo. She comments on the fact that he cannot really be what he appeared to her, saying that he is like a devil on the inside and an angel on the outside. 2. Juliet remains loyal to Romeo, realizing that if he had not killed Tybalt, Tybalt would have killed him. She explains that her sadness over Romeo’s banishment is as bad as learning of Tybalt’s death ten-thousand times over. She indicates that there is no end to the sadness she feels.

III iii 32-54 Romeo Friar Romeo explains that being banished is worse than death because he will be separated from Juliet. He exaggerates, indicating that it would have been better for the Friar to stab him or poison him than tell him that he is banished. He states that flies have more freedom than he does because they can make contact with Juliet’s hand, but he cannot. 2. Through a simile, Romeo says that the sadness that his name causes Juliet is a bullet shot from a gun that murders her just as his hand murdered her cousin Tybalt. He asks the Friar where in his body his name is so he can cut it out before threatening to kill himself.

Juliet Lady Capulet states that Juliet’s father has arranged for a day of joy for Juliet that no one expected. She is indicating that, out of love for Juliet, her father has arranged for her to marry Paris. 2. Capulet Nurse Capulet expresses his anger, indicating that he has worked day and night to arrange Juliet’s marriage but is furious that she has refused to marry Paris. Out of his love for her as a parent, he has tried to ensure her future happiness, but Juliet refuses to marry Paris because she is already married to Romeo.

Review the “Think Critically” questions on p and p in TLOL. You should be prepared to answer any of them on the exam on acts I-III. 5. Do you think Romeo and Juliet marry too soon? Explain.
