LARP Prototype Assembly Steps Towards Q1 and Q3 Production Dan Cheng MQXF Design Review December 10-12, 2014 CERN

Outline LARP magnet assembly experience MQXF Short Prototype Assembly Plans MQXF Long Prototype Assembly Scale-up Status Summary 12/11/2014 D. Cheng2

LARP Magnet Assembly Experience Tooling and processes developed from prior magnets – Based on experience from TQS, HQ, LR, LQ Utilizes already-designed tooling – FNAL rollover tooling designs, with some design modifications – Existing lifting hardware (SQXF, LQ, etc.) Differences expected in QXF assemblies: – GPI installation will be incorporated in these coils – SQXF handling tooling should be scalable towards LQXF and production assemblies 12/11/2014 D. Cheng3 TQSLR HQLQ QXF, short QXF, Long

LQ Magnet Assembly Experience 12/11/2014 D. Cheng4 Shell & Yoke assembly Coilpack assembly and insertion Magnet handling

Short Prototype Assembly Plans 1.5 m long magnetic structure Builds on HQ and LQ experience – Recovers old tooling where possible & cost effective – Also coordinated with CERN tooling design Incorporates new tooling in preparation for scale-up 12/11/2014 D. Cheng5

Parts CMM Plan Components will be received from vendor Key features are measured and characterized Data is used to determine best fits, required shims, etc. during assembly operations 12/11/2014 D. Cheng6
