PRESENTATION TECHNIQUES FOR TELEVISION AND BROADCASTING Christopher O’Neill

Bill O’Reilly is a “news” presenter for fox news and [presents the most popular news show in America, Anderson Cooper is the primary anchor for the CNN news show Anderson cooper.

Bill O’Reilly Bill O’Reilly has a very strong New York accent and can be very aggressive and condescending to his viewers, his interviews and debates on his opinionated show can become can become very heated and ca lead into full blown shouting matches at times, this has led to various people calling him a bully who has to become very aggressive in his stance and sound angry at certain issues rather than present his argument with hard facts in a controlled and professional matter, he has also reverted to name calling on his show and threats. You can see a very distinct difference in the way he talks to republicans and whenever he talks to liberals, with a interview with dick Cheney he speaks surprisingly very politely. In terms of body language, Bill O’Reilly can be quite aggressive, he can use a lot of finger pointing, many people who have been face to face with him his show have considered him a very intimidating man as he stands at around 6 foot 5. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9FfXIHNVL8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CsUY9g2kZD0

Anderson Cooper Anderson cooper however is the opposite to this, Anderson Cooper treats his guest with a lot of respect and lets them defend themselves fairly without letting his own thoughts get the in the way no matter how negative the story may be, he speaks in a very calm and polite matter. On Anderson cooper’s show the camera is usually pointed at the shoulder level so there isn’t a much body language. Whenever he is interviewing people who are on the set with him he is usually looking very interested in what they are saying. He always keeps eye contact with his guest. He makes the guest feel comfortable while on his show. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=psigRG_JJwA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5LO2LaU_atw

Both men are dressed in formal attire on their shows and both look respectable. Both shows also take place in a studio and are filmed on a set, usually their interviewees will either be on the set with them or they will be put behind a green screen where they will be filmed, usually this happens if the interviewee is in a different part of the world or country and can’t make it to the set. Both shows are usually broadcasted live on television and the internet, the target audience is usually people who want to keep informed, studies have shown that people who watch the O’Reilly factor are usually republican and the age demographic is 50 and over. While the age demographic for Anderson coopers show is 25-54.

The new two presenters that I will compare and contrast will be Graham Norton and Michael Parkinson. Both men present a Talk shows produced by the BBC.

Graham Norton is a very lively presenter, often at times poking fun at his audience and his guest; he puts a lot of energy into his show. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZwS14TiO7Pk

Michael Parkinson’s is a much more relaxed TV presenter who speaks with a much more calm and polite matter, the energy of his shows usually comes from his guests, he is usually very soft spoken with his very distinct British accent. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0LRdyqS0iS0

Graham Norton, as you can see in the photo below is usually very brightly dressed while Michael Parkinson is much more formal in the way that he is dressed. Both shows are presented on TV, like most TV talk shows however they usually have a YouTube channel in which they present their interviews in clips. Both shows are shot on a television set, Graham Norton’s show is usually brightly coloured while Parkinson’s set has a distinctively blue look to it, the whole look and feel of Graham Norton’s show is much more lively that Parkinson’s, both shows can be very funny and entertaining but Parkinson’s show can have a much more formal and serious feel to its interviews, both shows usually can have several people being interviewed at the same time, this is good as it makes the show much more interesting. There isn’t really a age demographic for these shows, Parkinson’s show
