Bronchitis is an inflammation of the bronchial tubes in the lungs, which connect the lungs to the trachea. It occurs when the trachea and the large and small bronchi become inflamed because of an irritation or infection. What's bronchitis?

Causes Bronchitis does not appear suddenly. Some of its causes may be: A cold or flu. Mycoplasma Pneumoniae Bacteria, so-called "walking pneumonia". Inhaling irritating fumes or dust. Being old, smoker, people with a weak immune system or anyone who had repeated lung illnesses.

Symptoms Bronchitis occurs normally after a cold, so the first symptoms are fever, muscle aches, nasal congestion and sore throat. The main symptoms when you already have bronchitis are: Continuous cough, which can cause injuries in the chest wall or even the person to faint. Wheezing (difficulty to breath normally).

Transmission If bronchitis is caused by a bacteria, it can be contagious by cough and proximity. If it is caused by any other reason it is not contagious.

Types Acute bronchitis: Inflammation of the bronchi caused by an infection or irritation. The infection usually clears up in a few days; however the cough may last longer. Chronic bronchitis: A continuous inflammation of the bronchi. Also known as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Prevention Stop smoking. Children should never be exposed to secondhand smoke inside the home. Avoiding long exposure to air pollution from heavy traffic.

I Treatment In children, amoxicillin is the usual drug of choice. Antibiotics are not useful in viral infections. The main goal of treatment of chronic bronchitis is reducing irritation of the bronchial tubes.

II Treatment The principal bronchodilators are: Inhaled Bronchodilators: Drugs whose mission is to dilate the bronchi, facilitating the flow of air. Oral Bronchodilators: They act like the inhaled route, dilating the airways, but more effectively. Inhaled corticosteroids: Its function is to maintain the inflammation of the bronchi in control.
