2 Deacons While we consider the organization of the church, we must not overlook the servants who minister, the DEACONS. The word DEACON comes from the greek word deaconos, meaning “to minister”. Typically we think of them working with elders, though the first deacons worked without elders. Acts 6:1-6 Deacons must meet certain qualifications.

3 Deacon’s Work Men who serve a particular need. Acts 6:1-6 Very little mentioned in the scriptures with specifics in mind. The term itself identifies the work they do, to minister to others. Today, they serve in visiting sick and their needs, serving at the Lord’s table, assisting elders in watching over the flock, and assisting in the worship service, etc. Requirements at the beginning were men of faith, godly wisdom, and good report. Acts 6:3

4 Deacon’s Qualifications God has specified certain qualifications for the office of Deacon. 1 Tim. 3:8-13; 8 ¶ Likewise must the deacons be grave, not doubletongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre; 9 Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience. 10 And let these also first be proved; then let them use the office of a deacon, being found blameless. 11 Even so must their wives be grave, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things. 12 Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well. 13 For they that have used the office of a deacon well purchase to themselves a good degree, and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.
