1 Colonists vs British

2  Westward expansion is restricted because of the Proclamation of 1763  Speculate-buy land as an investment  Quartering Act-law that required colonists to house all British soldiers.  Debt-British in debt bc of the French and Indian War  1765 Sugar Act-tax on sugar, molasses, and other products shipped to the colonies.

3  1766-a law that required all legal and commercial documents to carry an official stamp showing a tax had been paid  -newspapers, cards, wills, diplomas, contracts

4  Patrick Henry-Virginia House of Burgesses ◦ Demanded resistance ◦ “No taxation without representation”  Stamp Act Congress: Drafted petition to King  Sons of Liberty-opposed British policies ◦ Encouraged people to attack customs officials and burn stamps

5  Boycott-refusal to buy goods and services  Parliament repealed Stamp Act in 1766  But passed Declaratory Act-stated that Parliament had supreme authority to govern the colonies.

6  1. Why would Britain’s new laws have convinced American’s that their freedom was under threat?  2. Imagine you are a member of the Sons of Liberty. Would you influence your fellow members to use or to avoid violent protests?

7  Townshend Acts: Duties on imports like glass, paper, paint, led, and tea.  British officers issued writs of assistance- search warrants to enter homes and businesses to search for smuggled goods.  Colonists outraged again!  The writs went against their natural rights.

8  Boycott of British goods  Daughters of Liberty-urged colonists to weave their own cloth and use own products instead of British goods.  More troops summoned.  Samuel Adams-leader of the Boston Sons of Liberty stated “ We will destroy every soldier that dare put his foot on shore”
