1 Mrs. Ramirez Honors Physical Science 2 nd Semester

2 The Classroom  Students should come to class prepared to participate in discussions & activities. All students should bring the necessary tools with them to each class. All projects will be graded for accuracy & neatness. All work should be completed on time, as this will affect the overall learning experience if work is not done as requested.

3 Behavioral Expectations  Quietly enter the classroom.  Be in their seats when the bell rings with necessary materials each day  No writing on desks or leaving trash on the floor  Respect the property of the school and others  Keep cell phones OFF and stored safely away  Any unauthorized cell phones will be confiscated until the end of the day

4 TOPICS COVERED 2 ND SEMESTER  ATOMS  PERIODIC TABLE  CHEMICAL BONDING  CHEMICAL REACTIONS  CHEMICAL COMPOUNDS  CHEMISTRY OF LIVING THINGS  STARS, GALAZIES, AND THE UNIVERSE  OUR SOLAR SYSTEM

5 Grades  Content assessment is compiled from homework, quizzes, exams, projects and labs. The course will follow the grading scale as stated in the Saint Andrew’s Episcopal School Parent/Student Handbook as it applies to Middle School Science. Grades will be posted twice monthly in the Student Portal.

6 Grading Scale  90-100% =A, 80-89%=B, 70-79%=C, 60- 69%=D, 0-59% = F.  U’s are given in work habits for two tardies, and or two missing assignments per 5 week grading period.

7 Grades  Science grades are weighted:  exams 20%, quizzes 20%, labs 20%, homework 15%, projects 25%.  No extra credit will be offered

8 MAKE-UP WORK  Students have 1 make-up day for each absence without penalty. Late work will be penalized 2 full grades. (Max grade will be 80%) Late work is not accepted the last 5 weeks of each semester. (fall & spring)

9 Lab Teams  You will be assigned to lab teams. During group activities or labs you will work in these teams. I expect people to cooperate and work together.  Each lab team will be responsible for putting equipment & materials back and cleaning up.  Labs are to be submitted at the end of the day that they are due. (shared through google docs) Any documents submitted after 9 pm is considered late.  Late labs start at 80%.  All unfinished and uncollected labs will be given 0%.

10 Labs  Labs will be performed as part of a team  Lab reports are to be written individually  No two lab reports should be identical/ data is the only exception  Identical lab reports is cheating and students will be sent to counselor, receive a 0 for a grade, U for work habits and a call will be made to the parents  No make up lab will be offered

11 Changes to class from 1 st Semester  Submit class assignments – lab reports/ presentation/video using google drive  Every student needs to have a gmail account  Documents will be sent to my gmail address joannearamirez@gmail.com

12 Why use Google Drive?  Create and edit documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and more.  Open your files from any computer with an Internet connection.  Invite others to collaborate on your documents.  Retrieve your files even if your computer is lost, stolen, or broken.  Your documents will still be safe in the cloud.

13 Creating Files on Google Drive  These are the types of docs you can create and share with Google Drive:  Documents: For composing letters, flyers, essays, and other text-based files (similar to Microsoft Word documents)  Spreadsheets: For storing and organizing information (similar to Microsoft Excel worksheets)  Presentations: For creating and presenting slides (similar to Microsoft PowerPoint slideshows)  Forms: For collecting and organizing data  Drawings: For creating simple vector graphics or diagrams

14 To create a new doc:  Navigate to your Google Drive.Google Drive  Locate and click the Create button.  Select the type of doc you would like to create from the drop-down menu.  Your new doc will open automatically in a new tab on your browser.

15 To create a new doc:  At the top of the page, locate and select Untitled document. The Rename Document dialog box will appear. Type a name for your doc, then click OK.  Your doc will be renamed.  If you accidentally close your doc or need to make revisions, you can access it again from your Google Drive, where it will be saved automatically.

16 Grading  Students/parents can view grades online  No longer need to ask me what your current grade is  Progress reports can be printed off  Behavioral progress reports can be sent off to parents  Quizzes can be taken online

17 Students now need to sign-up for an account

18 http://www.engrade.com/student-signup Students set up an account at engrade-gcimorelli-12345 Students first type in the following, where the number is the ID number you assigned them

19 Students will then select a usnername and password

20 Many times the username is not available and they have to create another one

21 They will then be asked to type in a word (for secure connections) and then the password they just created

22 http://www.engrade.com/login.php Students now check their grades gwashington4

23 Students may look at just their average as well as the grade on each assignment

24 They should always then Log-Off
