Represent the people who live in the region or constituency My school is placed in the Dundee West constituency and our MP is Jim McGovern and our MSP is Joe Fitzpartrick. These two men go to the two parliaments to represent us and our views and to vote for what they think we want. Joe Fitzpatrick Jim McGovern

Attend Party Business- in parliament and constituency Work with other MSPs and MPs They attend business meetings with their party which they represent, in Parliament and in their constituency. For example Dundee West’s MP Jim McGovern party is Labour so he will attend Labour Party meetings with other Labour members. They go to these meetings to speak about what there constituency wants and what they can do to meet these needs. Also to see what their party’s next aim will be. They meet other MSPs and MPs in Parliament to raise issues affecting their constituents, attending debates and vote on new laws. They don’t always debate they sometimes work together to get the best out come for their constituency and region.

Work in committees Attend Parliament debates Most MPs and MSPs are also members of committees, which look at issues in detail, from government policy and new laws, to wider topics like human rights. These committees may contain local people who help the committee to come out with the best outcome because it’s the local people’s view. MSPs and MPs attend Parliament debates to fight for what they think is best for there constituency and the country. Debates are regular, there is a debates every day but they don’t attend them all. They debate about what new laws and policies would be best for every one.

Propose Members’ Bills Answers letters, e-mails and enquiries A member’s bill is when a member of Parliament sets out the proposals for new laws or plans to change existing laws, that are presented for debate before Parliament. Any representative can put proposals in. MSPs And MPs answer letters, e-mails and enquiries from constituents. These may be about: Local issues e.g. schooling National issues e.g. taxes International issues e.g. world recession. Anybody can write to their MSP or MP.
