Reflexive and Intensive Pronouns Pronouns that end in –self or –selves are either reflexive or intensive. They are: Myself Yourself Herself, himself, itself Ourselves, yourselves, themselves

IMPORTANT HINT: hisself theirselves ARE NOT WORDS!!!

Problem pronouns: How do you know if they’re reflexive or intensive? A reflexive pronoun refers to the subject and directs the action of the verb back to the subject. Reflexive pronouns ARE necessary to the meaning of the sentence. Without them the sentence does NOT make sense.

The teacher convinced herself that the class was behaving. If you take out the pronoun, the sentence does not make sense, so it is a reflexive pronoun.

An intensive pronoun emphasizes a noun or pronoun within the same sentence. Intensive pronouns are NOT necessary to the meaning of the sentence. If you take them out, the sentence still makes sense.

I myself have no idea what you’re talking about! If you take out the intensive pronoun, the sentence still makes sense and does not change meaning.
