1 Class Expectations Educational Finance EAD 951A

2 Attendance/Participation u Students are expected to attend class, arrive on time, to actively participate in class discussions and to remain until the end of class. u If a personal or professional situation creates a conflict, the instructor must be advised, preferably in writing and in advance. If appropriate, an alternative activity/assignment may be required.

3 Topic Articles u Each student is to select two topics from the course outline and secure a related magazine, journal, newspaper, or chapter except from a book for each topic. u The student is to prepare a one page, typed report for each topic which summarizes the main points expressed. u Topic Articles are due on July 14 and July 20.

4 Policy Brief u In no more than five typed pages, critically analyze Michigan’s new school reform plan based upon the 10 principles of school finance reform that will be distributed and discussed in class. The policy brief must clearly identify issues, critically analyze and synthesize findings, and develop appropriate reactions, recommendations, and implications. u The Policy Brief is due on July 16.

5 Reflection Paper u In a 3 to 5 page, typed paper reflect on what you have learned about school finance and the role of politics in policy development that you did not know before or have developed new or different insights concerning. u The Reflection Paper is due on July 23.

6 The papers will be evaluated on the basis of: (1) consistency with the assignment; (2) clarity of written expression; and (3) originality of thought.

7 Grading u Attendance / Participation 20% u Topic Articles 20% u Policy Brief 30% u Reflection Paper 30%

8 Students who fail to complete all course requirements will be graded on the basis of the work they have completed.
