Problem Solving with Decimals 10 Challenges

(WHITE) John went to Lowes and purchased one orange juice and one apple juice for a total of $5.64. He has to pay tax. The tax is 7 cents on the dollar or 7%. What did John pay the cashier in total? If the price of the orange juice was $2.36, what was the difference in price between the orange juice and apple juice? (BLUE) Kiera cut a piece of ribbon into two parts. The first piece was 17.3 inches long. The second piece was 5.6 inches less. What was the total length of the ribbon? If she had cut the ribbon into 3 equal parts, what would have been the measure of each part?

(GREEN) It’s Christmas and ties are on sale at Jenk’s Department Store. Each tie costs $14.99. Howard purchased three ties and had to pay 7% tax. He gave the cashier $50. How much tax did Howard have to pay? How much change did the cashier give back to Howard? (YELLOW) Jenna purchased a 24.5 ounce bottle of syrup for Saturday morning breakfast. After four people used equal amounts of syrup, there were 11.7 ounces left. How many ounces did each person use? If each person had 4 pancakes, how much syrup was used per pancake?

(PURPLE) While walking in the Triangle “Walk for Heart” race, Laura averaged 3.63 miles per hour. How far did she walk in 1.5 hours? If she kept up this pace, to the nearest TENTH, how long would it take her to walk a marathon? (26.2 miles is a marathon) How many exact hours and minutes will this take her? (RED) Mitchell walked 8.5 laps at a rate of 2.4 minutes per lap. How long was his entire walk? (Tell this in minutes and seconds) If Mitchell could increase his walking rate by 10%, how long would his walk take then? (Round to nearest tenth and tell this in minutes and seconds) How much faster would this be from his original time?

(BROWN) Cheryl bought 5 pairs of jeans. The clearance bar had Lee’s Jeans priced at 2 for $25.00. Levi’s were 3 for $32.00. Vanderbilt Jeans were not on sale. They were $28.99 per pair. Cheryl bought 2 pair of Lee’s, 2 pair of Levi’s and 1 pair of Vanderbilt. How much was her total before tax? She lucked out! This was a tax free weekend. But she did want to donate 5% of her total to the food bank at the counter. When she figured this out, she rounded to the nearest dollar. How much did she donate? (GRAY) Joe ran a 5 mile race in 35.25 minutes. The winner was clocked at running a 6 minute mile. If Joe ran at a constant rate, how long did it take Joe to run one mile? What was the difference in Joe’s rate per mile and the winner?

(PINK) Maggie bought 1.5 lbs of chicken for $6.54, 2 lbs. of grapes for $2.38/pound and.75 lbs of cashews for $8.95 What is the cost per pound of chicken? What is the cost per pound of grapes? What is the cost per pound for the cashews? She had $40.00. She estimates that she has plenty of money to buy more cashews. About how many more lbs. of cashews can she buy? (AQUA) Carl drove 178.71 miles in 3 hours. What was Carl’s rate in miles per hour to the nearest whole number? If Carl’s car gets 25 miles/gallon, how many gallons of gas did he use to the nearest tenth? His car holds 16 gallons. About how many more miles can he go with the gallons he has left?
