2 Vocabulary vo-ca-bu-la-ry o This first part of this unit has 12 words. o Most of the words are broken up into syllables as we tend to say them. o The underlined words are one syllable words. o Learn each word’s definition and spelling.

3 town Definition: o A town is a group of houses, shops and buildings where people live and work. o A town usually has its own post office, library, and school.

4 work-er Definition: o A worker is someone who does a job. o A worker gets paid to do a job. o These are different kinds of workers : police officers mechanics bakers fire firefighters teachers cooks construction workers painters housekeepers librarians gardeners

5 news Definition: o News is information about things that happen in a community. o You can get the news from a television program, the radio, the computer or a newspaper.

6 neigh-bor Definition: o A neighbor is someone who lives near you. o A neighbor can live in your building, or across the street. o They live in your neighborhood.

7 neigh-bor-hood Definition: o A neighborhood includes the houses, shops, schools, and parks near your home.

8 be-long Definition: o If you belong to a group, you are a part of it. o You belong to your family, your neighborhood, your class, and your school. You are a part of these groups.

9 build-ing Definition: o A building has walls, a roof, and a door. o A building can be a house, a store, or a school.

10 lo-cate Definition: o When you locate something, you find out where it is. o A map is used to locate places.

11 map Definition: o A map is a drawing that shows where things are. o A map can show cities, states, and countries. o A map can also show streets, parks, lakes, and mountains.

12 fire sta- tion Definition: o A fire station is a building were firefighters wait until they are needed to put out fires.

13 po-lice sta-tion Definition: o A police station is a building where police officers work. o Some police officers do paperwork. They can answer many questions about the law at the police station. o At the police station, they can take your fingerprints.

14 li-bra-ry Definition: o A library is a place with books that people can borrow. o A library also has magazines, DVDs, and CDs that people can use and return. o There are computers at the library.
