1 CHEMISTRY F3 Bridging Course

2 FORM 3 BRIDGING COURSE (2005) HKCEE EXAMINATION CHEMISTRY (English)
INTEGRATED SCIENCE (CHINESE)

3 Practise (experiment)
LEARNING CHEMISTRY LEARNING CHEMISTRY (USING ENGLISH) CONSOLIDATE UNDERSTAND Listen Read Speak Write Practise (experiment)

4 Arrangements File (notes and worksheets) Exercise book (homework)
Subject leader 8 Groups in laboratory (leader) 10 Study Groups

5 Course Outline Laboratory Safety Common apparatus
Simple Experimental techniques Chemicals and hazard warning labels Observation exercises What is Chemistry Matter (Muddy sea water) Elements and Atoms

6 Laboratory Safety Students should not enter the laboratory unless a teacher (or laboratory technician) is present. Students should follow teacher’s instructions strictly. Students should not remove anything from the laboratory without permission. Students should not rush around or play in the laboratory. Students should return apparatus and chemicals to the appropriate places after used. Students should report all accidents and breakages to their teachers.

7 Laboratory Safety (cont)
Eating, drinking and smoking are strictly forbidden in the laboratory. Wear safety goggles in the laboratory whenever necessary. Always read the label on a reagent bottle carefully before use. Do not taste anything in the laboratory. Always wash hands thoroughly after experiment. Always tie up your long hair.

8 Common apparatus Add some water in a BEAKER.
Pour some water into a TEST TUBE. Hold the test tube using a TEST TUBE HOLDER and shake it. Pour some water into a MEASURING CYLINDER and read the volume. Remove some water from the measuring cylinder with a DROPPER.

9 Prepare a solution Transfer some salt into a beaker using a SPATULA.
Add water to the 50 cm3 mark. Stir the liquid with a GLASS ROD so as to dissolve the salt. A clear solution is obtained.

10 Bunsen Burner Close the AIR HOLE
Turn on the GAS SUPPLY and Light the lighter/ or Match Adjust the air hole NON-LUMINOUS FLAME

11 Bunsen Burner BURNING (solid Fuel, liquid fuel, gaseous fuel) HEATING
TEST/ BOILING TUBE (liquid/ solution) CRUCIBLE (solid) BOILING BEAKER, BOILING TUBE (liquid/ solution) EVAPORATING EVAPORATING DISH (solution)

12 Simple experimental techniques
Mix two solutions using test tubes. Heat some solution in a test tube. Boil some solution in a boiling tube. Evaporate some solution. Filter a mixture (of mud and water). Distill a mixture (to get the liquid). Crystallize the solid from a solution.

13 Hazard Warning Labels FLAMMABLE HARMFUL / IRRITANT TOXIC CORROSIVE
EXPLOSIVE OXIDIZING CARCINOGEN

14 Observation Exercises
Mix solutions A and B. Mix solutions C and D. Mix solutions E and F. Mix solutions G and H. Add solution I to solid J. Add solution K to solid L. Pass gas M to solution N.

15 Observation Exercises
Mix solutions A and B. (orange solution) Mix solutions C and D. (brown solution) Mix solutions E and F. (blue precipitate) Mix solutions G and H. (white precipitate) Add solution I to solid J. (colourless gas) Add solution K to solid L. (brown gas) Pass gas M to solution N.(milky)
