1
Sewing with Knits and Lightweight Fabrics
2
Knits Don’t need to fit the garment as precisely because of the stretch Very comfortable to wear
3
Knits Construction Techniques: – Seam has to stretch just like the fabric – Stretch the fabric slightly as you sew – Certain seams can be sewn on the serger machine – Reinforce some seams with a second seam close to the first seam – If fabric snags, try a ball-point needle
4
Knits Construction Techniques – Alternate stitching method – use a zigzag stitch at.5 – Most knits don’t ravel, so seam finishing is not necessary – Machine hems using a twin needle is ideal – try the cover lock stitch
5
Lightweight Fabrics Test sewing and serging on a scrap of fabric Change the needle if fabric gets snagged Begin sewing the seam ½” from the end of the fabric, then backstitch
6
Lightweight Fabrics Seam finishes – if serging is not a good option, use pinking sheers or zigzag the seam allowance together. Very sheer fabrics are best sewn using a French seam. If your fabric puckers, use tissue paper as a stabilizer over and under your fabric as you sew.
