BRIEF INTERVENTIONS: SAFETY PLANNING Prioritized written list of coping strategies and resources for use during a suicidal crisis. Helps provide a sense of control. Uses a brief, easy-to-read format that uses the patient’s own words. Can serve to motivate people to engage in treatment. Should be the first intervention with a suicidal patient Helps to immediately enhance patients’ sense of control over suicidal urges and thoughts and conveys a feeling that they can “survive” suicidal feelings It is no substitute for treatment Not to be used if there is imminent danger It is NOT a No-Suicide Contract
