Each day we will tally up team points for the class. Points will be rewarded for:
Entire class completing homework
Nobody putting their head down during class
No uniform violations
No cell phones/electronic devices out
No tardies
No trash on the floor
Desks straight at the end of class
No talking during the Catalyst
No cursing
No talking during exit ticket
Wild Card

7. Individual Points
I will also hand out “McKnight’s Positive Points” when I see a student doing something positive in the class.
Every two weeks we will have a “McKnight’s Positive Points” raffle.

Since I don’t know how long periods will run, this slide will stay up for a while and any flex time will be used to begin work on the homework. It should take about 30 minutes to get to here. If periods are (heaven forbid) normal length, keep going.

Exit question = assesses THE most important things learned that day. If you can answer the exit question correctly, then you know you learned what you needed to learn.
The exit question is a way for me to understand how well you understood the lesson. It’s a waste of my time if you copy or leave it blank

Segue into what separates humans from animals, in general? (Lots of kids will say language: note that lots of animals have REAL languages, i.e., languages with grammar/syntax, complex vocabularies. Bees communicate via the waggle dance, elephants communicate via stomping their feet and creating sound waves, etc.) Talk about opposable thumbs  tools, culture, civilization. Evolution.

31. Why do we grow old and die?
(As opposed to living forever.)
Competing theories, we’re still not entirely sure the reason. (A) Cells are damaged by “free radicals,” oxidized in the same manner as an apple left out in the sun. (B) Energy conservation. Since we could be killed by accident at any time, smarter for the body to concentrate on us having children than maintaining itself. (C) Wear and tear over time overwhelms body’s ability to repair itself. May be why exercise  longer life.
Talk about impact that humans have on environment. What would happen if we lived longer? More individual impact on the environment, but would probably have fewer babies. Overpopulation less of an issue? Talk about overpopulation, resource use, consumption.

32. Understanding the world around us
Planet Earth, starting at 18:45 (fast seasons change)  birds of paradise dancing, shark attack, elephants wandering through desert. During cuts to rainforest, talk about deforestation and its effect on the environment (loss of plants that could be used for medicine, less CO2 uptake/O2 output, extinction, effect of extinction on food web). During cuts to desert, talk about desertification; we’re using up water, causing deserts to expand. Discussion: what would happen to humanity if this keeps up? During cuts to ocean, talk about rising sea levels due to global warming (make sure to explain what global warming is first!!!), discuss what this means for humans. If projected global warming continues, most of Louisiana coastline will be underwater! Eco-refugees: people who live on coast will flee elsewhere  overpopulation, starvation, sanitation issues…

33. So Why Do We Care? Biology is cool! Want money?
Biology is on the GEE (Graduate Exit Exam), which you need to pass to graduate high school.
The more education you get, the more money you earn. On average, college graduates earn $22,000 more than high-school graduates, every year.

34. Mini Scholars
Head: What is the burning question in your head? What is one question you would like someone to answer?
Heart: What do you hold closest to your heart? What do you care about more than anything else?
Stomach: What makes you sick to your stomach? What really upsets you?
Hands: What do you bring to this class? What is your unique contribution?
Feet: What do you want to walk out of here with at the end of the year? What do you want to accomplish?
Each group needs to send one person up to my desk to get… 1 pair of markers (for the whole group), 1 cardboard cut-out (for each person)
Save at least 40 minutes for this activity if you want to finish it in class. If periods are super short, then I’ll give this as homework.
