Image Analysis Carey Hammel and Mike Bruder

Problem What are the sizes of crystals that can be viewed through a microscope?

Hypothesis It should be possible to take pictures with the computer and then analyze the image.

Procedure First we used the L2001 Image Analyzer, it includes a CCD digital camera and a special program. We could get a still picture from this but never got any measurements.

Procedure Then we used the Flex-Cam and took pictures from the microscope, and from there they would be on computer.

Procedure With the pictures, we figured out how big they were in the microscope. At 100X the pictures were 2mm across At 400x the pictures were.2mm across

Results Knowing the size of the pictures we could measure the sides of the crystals. Some of the best crystals are the Silver Nitrate ones.

Conclusions Our Conclusions are that it is possible to find the size of crystals using a simple computer and paint program. Your results would probably be much better if you used something advanced like the L2001.

Conclusions With any crystals we viewed on the microscope, we could put them on the computer and measure their size. We might have had more results if we would have had better crystals with different variations.
