Effective PA Interview 1. Participation leads to satisfaction and acceptance of supervisor feedback. 2. Sensitivity on part of rater leads to fairness perceptions. 3. Specific goals results in 2X productivity change as general goals.

Effective PA Interview 4. Discussing problems and working toward solution has an effect on productivity. 5. Criticism is correlated with defensive reaction. 6. Employee input before, during, and after influences satisfaction and perceptions of equity.

Approaches to Conducting Appraisals 1. Tell and Sell 2. Tell and Listen 3. Problem Solving - maximizes employee participation, solving problems, and setting goals.

Effective Problem Solving 1. Explain that purpose is to provide recognition and discuss problems. 2. Ask employee at beginning what deserves recognition. 3. Ask employee what they should start doing emphasizing future not past.

Effective Problem Solving 4. Ask if you can provide assistance. 5. After you probe for further information, you give input to steps 2-4. If they failed to mention important stuff, discuss no more than 2-4 areas for improvement. 6. Focus on what you want to see occur not otherwise
