2 Executive Office Advise the president on important matters White House Staff – “the President’s people” Vice President – Only job given by Constitution is to preside over Senate – Takes over if president dies Special Advisory Groups – Domestic & foreign policy Office of Management & Budget (OMB)  Cost of goals National Security Council (NSC)  Foreign Policy Office of Homeland Security  Safeguard our country

3 Executive Departments Largest part of the executive branch Work with carrying laws and running agencies President appoints a head to each executive branch Must be approved by Senate Cabinet – Core group of advisors to the president

4 Independent Agencies Approximately 60 Three types – Executive Agencies Under direct control of the President (EPA) – Regulatory Commissions Congress formed 12 (FCC CPSC) Free from political influences – Government corporations Similar to private business  make a profit (Postal Service) Congress still has a say as to how things go Civil Service program was established to allow positions to be filled on merit

5 Today’s Assignment Write a classified ad Keep in mind the skills & duties that will be required (Must include 3) Consider the kind of personal qualities that the job requires (2) Minimum of 5 sentences Must include a heading May include a picture Due at the end of the hour

6 BUSY BODIES Does working non-stop sound like a great way to live? Do you enjoy being in the public eye? Do you feel you can make a difference? YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES The U.S. Federal Government wants YOU! Must be 35 years or older and a natural born citizen. Must be prepared to be Commander in Chief (Experience not necessary) and have great economic skills. Time management skills are a plus! Must be able to act as chief of state and appoint Supreme Court Justices. Charismatic and energetic people only need apply.
