2 Land Rights and Social Rank Upper class Large landowners Upper Middle Class Small farmers Artisans Merchants Lower Middle Class Renters Unskilled Worker s Lower Classes Indentured Servants Slaves Land was plentiful in the Americas Land was also a commodity You were free to sell whatever it produced Land ownership meant political rights and prosperity Land Ownership helped create a social hierarchy The largest group was in fact small farmers LAND, RIGHTS, AND WEALTH

3 Women and the Economy Duties of Women: – Cooking – Churning butter – Making soap – Making Candles – Spinning – Sewing – Harvesting – Having children – Teaching children – Gardening Women bartered for much of their income Some Women ran taverns Women’s property and money belonged to their husbands

4 Young People at Work Families had between 6-8 children. The more kids the more workers. Kids started working at 3 Boys were apprenticed out at age 11 – Apprentice means to learn a trade Girls were meant to do chores within the house. Some girls would go away to learn how to weave.

5 Colonial Education The main purpose of education was to read the bible. Most people learned from home and were taught by their mother The 3 R’s: reading, (w)riting, (a)rithmetic. The rich had private tutors. Literacy rates – 85% of New England – 65% of Mid-Atlantic – 50% of the South It was a crime to educate slaves B is for -> C is for ->

6 Newspapers and Books The Boston New-Letter was the first colonial paper. Most books were imported from England Ben Franklin was the first colonial millionaire who made money through printing Books and newspapers affected culture by spreading new ideas and beliefs.

7 Homework Create a T-Chart (see below) in your homework section of your binder and use the information in the slides to answer the questions The answers will help you participate in upcoming class discussions about the American colonial culture QuestionsAnswers How did land ownership affect the political rights of the American colonists? What was the most common occupation (job) in Colonial America?

8 Homework QuestionsAnswers Who controlled women’s property and money? How did boys learn a trade? Which social class had the best education? Why was it a crime to educate slaves? (Do not try to find the answer in the slides or the textbook. The answer is not there. You have to think!)
