THE EASTER RISING BY ETHAN, SARAH AND DANIEL

World war 1 began in 1914. 10,000 Irish volunteers refused to fight for Britain in the war. The Irish volunteers held regular parades. James Connolly ran the ICA. (IRISH CITIZEN ARMY) THE BUILD UP

On Good Friday! The captain scuttled the ship because it was going into enemies hands. The IRB’s weapons were on the boat. THE BUILD UP CONTINUED

Men marched towards the GPO (general post office) on Easter Monday and took over it. People thought it was only an other parade but they thought wrong! They had a mixture of weapons ranging from shot guns to rifles. Patrick Pearse read out the Proclamation. THE RISING

The men also took over other buildings such as Jacobs Biscuit factory. The British troops surrounded the city. A boat attack Liberty Hall and two hundred British soldiers were killed. THE RISING CONTINUED! On Thursday James Connolly got seriously wounded. The GPO burns down. The Irish surrendered.

CONSCRIPTION ACT The conscription act forced people to join the British army ( VERY unfair)! It was passed because nobody joined the army in Ireland. Many organisations were against it.

The volunteers had been fighting since the Easter rising. They were reorganised by Micheal Collins. Micheal Collins masterminded the Irish volunteers. It lasted for 2 years. THE WAR OF INDEPENDENCE

One group of soldiers were called the black and tans because of their colour of their uniform. The other group was called The Auxiliaries. The IRA continued to ambush the police, the black and tans and the Auxiliaries. THE BLACK AND TANS

As well as the loss of life, war damaged the Irish Economy. Many firms closed down and jobs were lost. Lloyd George, British Prime Minister divided Ireland into 2 parliaments, Protestant and Catholic. PARTITION

The war started in 1922. It ended in 1923 in May. The Dáil debated the treaty until the 7 th of January 1922 and decided to accept it by 64 votes to 57. Eamonn De Valera refused to accept it. THE CIVIL WAR FIRE!
