THE NATURE OF TEXTS English Language Yo
2
Lets Refresh So we tend to get caught up in the themes on English Language that we need to remember our basic linguistic metalanguage. The subsystem are extremely important here: Discourse- the connection between sentences Morpholohy- parts of a word ie affix, suffix, root word, prefix Syntax- word order and constructions Phonetics and phonology- word sounds, intonation, stress Semantics- meaning of words Lexicon- vocabulary Pragmatics- general knowledge of how the word functions.

Sociolinguistics Sociolinguistics is a term including the aspects of linguistics applied toward the connections between language and society, and the way we use it in different social situations. It ranges from the study of the wide variety of dialects across a given region down to the analysis between the way men and women speak to one another. Sociolinguistics often shows us the humorous realities of human speech and how a dialect of a given language can often describe the age, sex, and social class of the speaker; it codes the social function of a language.

The domain, domain, domain This is referring to the general sphere of interest or activity where communication happens for example is it within the domain of religion, politics, education, friendship, work. Within the domain there are many factors that come into play that we need to consider. These are call sociolinguistics variables: Audience/Interlocutor- who you are talking to, how old are they, who are they to you. Locale- where are you when dialogue takes place. Field- what you are communicating about ie the topic Mode- spoken, written, electronic. Eg online, facebook, text, face to face

Interlocutors We need to take into account the human factor. Humans have emotions, they have baggage, they have issues and most of all they have moods. We never behave the same way linguistically all the time we respond differently at different times of the day and in different contexts. The way you speak to your doctor is not the same way you would speak to your family or your best friend. You also interact with the people closest to you differently each conversation, as you may not feel cooperative.
