5. Is impaired driving really a big deal? In 2014: Nearly half of all fatal crashes in 2014 were the result of impaired driving. Impaired driving played a role in 1,130 car crashes. 710 resulted in property damage, 369 resulted in serious injury, and 51 involved a death. 4,304 people were arrested for DUI.

10. A drink is a drink, right? When you have a drink, it is important to know how much you are drinking. One drink = 1 ounce of distilled spirits, or 5 ounces of wine, or 12 ounces of beer.

12. Factors that contribute to your Blood Alcohol Content (BAC). The number of drinks you consume; How slow or fast you drink; Your gender and weight; and/or Whether you have eaten.

13. Signs of impairment The signs if intoxication are predictable, progressive and significantly affect the attention skills needed to drive safely: Judgment. Making choices you might not normally make. Visual function. Trouble focusing and tracking moving objects. Coordination. Difficulty walking, talking, steering, controlling speed. Concentration. Difficulty paying attention. Perception. Inability to judge distances, speed, lane position, braking distance.

15. Take the Keys Suggest they’ve had too much to drink and it would be safer for someone else to drive or even suggest taking a cab. Be Calm. Joke about it. Make light of it. Try to make it sound like you are doing them a favor. If it’s a good friend, spouse, or significant other, tell them that if they insist on driving, you will not go with them. Insist on calling someone else for a ride, taking a cab, or walking. If it is somebody you don’t know well, speak to their friends and have them make an attempt to persuade them to hand over the keys. Usually they will listen. Locate their keys while they are preoccupied and take them away. Most likely, they will think they’ve lost them and will be forced to find another mode of transportation. Avoid embarrassing the person or being confrontational.
