Unit 04 “Vertical Motion” Introduction to Problem Solving Level: Easy “Dollar Bill Activity”
3
Activity/Calculation #1: How long does it take for the dollar bill ($1) to fall out of grasp? Δy = -0.08m V i = 0m/s (dropped) New Concepts: a = -9.8m/s 2 “Acceleration due to Gravity” Gravity pulls DOWN (-) always at a rate of -9.8m/s 2 Regardless of mass, shape or size!
5
Δy = -0.08m V i = 0m/s a = -9.8m/s 2 Δt = ? Δy = V i (Δt) + ½(a)(Δt) 2 -0.08m = (0m/s)(Δt) + ½(-9.8m/s 2 )(Δt) 2 -0.08m = 0+ (-4.9m/s 2 )(Δt) 2 -0.08m = -4.9m/s 2 (Δt) 2 -4.9m/s 2 0.016s 2 = Δt 2 √ √ 0.13s = Δt

Activity/Calculation #2: What is your “reaction time”? Activity Directions: 1.Have a partner hold a meter stick so your two fingers are at 0 meters. 2.Your partner will drop the meter stick. 3.React as fast as you can to catch the stick with your two fingers. 4.Use this distance (Δy) to calculate your “reaction time”.
