Crete…as seen from space. Island is about 100 miles from mainland Greece

Today the capital is Heraclion

Nearby is the famous palace of Knossos

The people of Crete still make a living from the sea

The Peloponnese Looks like a four fingered hand Some think it is an island but it is connected to the mainland by an isthmus In ancient time the Peloponneses was called Achaia

Can you see the canal which cuts through the isthmus today?

A rocky portage road Sailing around the Peloponnese was treacherous. Periander made first attempt to create canal…he failed and built portage road instead. Roman emperor Nero sent 6,000 slaves to hand dig a canal with spades… Canal finally built in 1893

Today There is a submersible bridge at either end of the canal that allows cars to cross. — http://knowledgequestmaps.com/blo g/2013/05/submersiblebridge- on-the-corinth-canal/.
