What is Digital Storytelling ? A the modern expression of the ancient art of storytelling. Digital stories derive their power by weaving images, music, narrative and voice together, thereby giving deep dimension and vivid color to characters, situations, experiences, and insights. - Digital Storytelling Association (Barrett).

Background Information The Seven Elements of Digital Storytelling 1. Point of view - What is the main point of the story and what is the perspective of the author? 2. A dramatic question - A key question that keeps the viewer’s attention and will be answered by the end of the story. 3. Emotional content - Serious issues that come alive in a personal and powerful way and connects the story to the audience. 4. The gift of your voice - A way to personalize the story to help the audience understand the context. 5. The power of the soundtrack - Music or other sounds that support and embellish the storyline. 6. Economy - Using just enough content to tell the story without overloading the viewer. 7. Pacing - The rhythm of the story and how slowly or quickly it progresses. (R0bin) Three major types: 1.Personal Narratives 2.Historical Documentaries 3.Informative and instructive stories. (Robin)

Digital Storytelling in the Classroom How is digital storytelling used? o Digital storytelling can be used in a classroom setting as an instructional tool. o Digital storytelling allows students to become creative storytellers by selecting a topic, conducting some research, writing a script, and developing an interesting story, all while working with technology. o Digital storytelling can be used by teachers to capture their students' attention, and it can be used by students to help them express themselves in a creative way.

Why Digital Storytelling? o Combining visual images with written text in the classroom improves student comprehension of the material being taught. o Digital storytelling helps both students and teachers collect, create, analyze, and combine visual images with written text. o When teachers create their own digital stories, they are sharing their own experiences in a creative way in order to help their students engage in the content. o This can also be a great way to facilitate discussion about the topics presented in the story and the classroom. o A digital story can work as a hook to capture the students' attention, even when learning difficult material. Digital storytelling can provide students with real life examples of what they are learning in class as a way to understand difficult concepts.

Digital storytelling helps teachers to: Keep up with their students and the advancing technology. Relate to their students, which in turn helps students relate to teachers. Get their students interested in math, science, technology, and all different kinds of subjects through the use of creative storytelling.

Example of technology Cost and References: Digital storytelling can cost from 0-$99. Today Movie Maker is included at no additional charges with Windows XP, and iMovie is provided with the Macintosh operating system. Teachers may find resource guides and books from Amazon and other sites, on how to use storytelling as low as $15. Here is a great example of digital storytelling a presented by the students in Scott County Schools and shared with the public: http://www.dtc.scott.k12.ky.us/technology/digitalstoryt elling/studentstories.html
