Waste Management By: Omair Shahid(Group Leader), Sori Park And Brad Cruz

What is Waste Management? Waste management is the collection, transport, processing, recycling or disposal, and monitoring of waste materials. The term usually relates to materials produced by human activity, and is generally undertaken to reduce their effect on health, the environment or aesthetics. Waste management is also carried out to recover resources from it. Waste management can involve solid, liquid, gaseous or radioactive substan ces, with different methods and fields of expertise for each.

What are the Causes of Waste Management? The issues of waste management are mainly due to environmental problem. They include: lack of space increase in hygiene levels advancement in science and technology pollution and global warming people have started waste management to conserve the Earth and make full use of things that are thrown away.

Extent of the Issue

METHODAMOUNT INCREASE FROM 1980-2005 Landfills0% Recycling22% Incineration-79% Other8% Extent (Cont.)

Effects Of Poor Waste Management There are 70,000 different chemicals in the world that are just being dumped into the ocean It is harmful to organisms in oceans, lakes, ponds etc because fish can consume the chemicals and then humans eat those fish. More than 100,000 marine mammals die annually due to improper waste disposal Groundwater pollution is the founder of 250 million diseases (cholera, typhoid) Leachate forms when garbage decomposes and it can seep into the groundwater (older landfills don't have this) Increase in wealth for local communities o However, if landfills fail there will be a large sum of money required for cleanup

Ways to Minimize Waste Optimize Your Resources - Try to think of different ways to do things that uses less supply's. Ex. When creating something arrange the materials a certain way that allows you to have more scraps. Reuse Scrap Materials - If you have any supplys or resources left over think of uses for them. Ex. Many Manufacturers send scraps back to the beginning of the production line to reuse them in new products. Improved Quality Control- steps can be taken to ensure that the number of reject batches is kept to a minimum. Ex. If you are baking cookies, test each batches edibility before creating the next batch, so you dont end up with 12 batches of poisoned cookies.
