6 DOCUMENTATION APA requires “references” instead of a bibliography, unless approved by the department List in alphabetical order List only works referred to in the document Reference lists should be double-spaced and the first line of entries should be indented Personal communications are not to be included in the reference list e.g., letters, memoranda and informal electronic communications

7 DOCUMENTATION Quotation marks
Double quote marks for direct quotes, titles of articles, verbatim quotes Use italics for technical terms or linguistic examples Use single marks for quotes within a quote

8 Documentation: Quoted Material
40 words or more should be a block quote with no quotation marks, indented and double spaced. Place citation after punctuation Less than 40 words use double quote marks. Place citation after closing quotation mark but before punctuation Must include page number for direct quotes

9 DOCUMENTATION: PLACEMENT OF CITATION
Midsentence: Place after closing quote mark and continue sentence. End of sentence: After closing quote mark, before punctuation End of Block Quote: After final punctuation Use ampersand (&) instead of and between authors’ names Comma between author and publication year

TABLES Tables are numbered consecutively in the order in which they are first mentioned Refer to tables by number, not as “the table above” or “the following table” Table Titles should be placed on top of tables Number tables with Arabic numerals Double-space Use horizontal rather than vertical lines within tables Capitalize the initial letter of the principled words and italicize the title

11 ILLUSTRATIONS AND FIGURES

13 Quotations Punctuation Block Quotes
Periods and commas should be placed within the quote marks; semicolons and colons go outside Block Quotes Indent Five or more lines Single space a block quote Do not use quote marks Leave a single line before and after block quotations Place footnote after the end punctuation

14 Tables Tables Do not use horizontal and vertical lines together
Flush left List table number before table title. Table titles should be centered on the top of the table Table must be introduced by text before they can be presented When referring to a table in the text, the word table should be lowercased Every table should be numbered with an Arabic numeral and given a title Reference the table by number not by phrase

15 Figures Number figures using Arabic numerals Figure captions below
Flush left Figure number should be followed by period For example: Figure 2. Block diagram of Fern Lake In text, refer to the figure by number and place as close as possible to their first reference in the paragraph

16 Notes Footnotes use Arabic numerals (superscript)
Footnotes must begin on the page where it is referenced Single space within the footnote citation Double space between footnotes Footnotes begin anew at the beginning of each chapter Note should be placed after punctuation Turabian recommends using footnotes rather than endnotes or parenthetical references

Tables must be both numbered and titled in sequential order. Table number and name should be placed above the table.
