1 Archetype Research Essay Self-Review

2 Formatting Times New Roman 12 point font Left alignment (NOT centered)
1 inch margins Spacing – double-spaced throughout

3 Header Name Teacher Name Class, Period Date
Day, Month, Year Clark Sample Ms. Ingraham English 12, Period 3 10 February 2014

4 Page numbering Upper right corner of EVERY page Name # Ingraham 1

5 Labeling Make a key at the top of your paper using your highlighters
Sample: Blue=Statement – is it one??? Or is it just a vague topic sentence Pink=Proof - examples Yellow=Commentary- explaining why your examples fit the archetype Green= Green Words in the thesis Label the topic sentences at the beginning of each section Label the transitions at the end of each section Highlight the body paragraphs for statement, proof, and commentary using your key

6 Eyeballing Percentages
Look at what you highlighted. Is more than 15-20% of what you wrote pink? You need to shorten quotes, develop commentary, or both. Write which one(s) you think you need to do If quotes are too long, cross out the part(s) of the quotes you think you don’t need

7 Thesis Statement Highlight green words in green
Check that they are “green” and NOUNS Make sure it isn’t three-prong Shouldn’t just list green words Does your thesis mention your archetype by name?

8 Proof format Choose quotes or summarize sections of plot as examples of what you are talking about. Integrate quotes within your OWN sentences; don’t leave them sitting alone with no introductory phrase. SITTING ALONE: “’It’s now or never,’ I think, and begin to saw” (Collins 187). Katniss is using the tracker-jackers to kill her opponents so that she can get away. INTEGRATED: Katniss demonstrates great presence of mind as she develops a plan to escape the so-called “Careers.” Although she is hurt and scared, she thinks, “ ‘It’s now or never…’ and begin(s) to saw” (Collins 187).

9 Citations Cite things you paraphrased from the articles in addition to citing direct quotes. Articles with an author but no pages or line numbers (Author). Articles without an author, pages, or line numbers (“first three words in article title…”). Cite paraphrased sections as well as direct quotes.

10 Claim Check– Topic sentences
Must make a claim about how that literary character/historical figure: If it looks like this, they do not have a claim: “Harry Potter was typical of the orphan archetype.” BETTER: “Because of his desire to fit in with the group, Harry Potter fits the Orphan archetype.” BETTER: “In the Harry Potter series, Harry shows both a fierce desire for independence and a longing to fit it, seemingly contradictory aspects of an Orphan. Reflects characteristics of your archetype

11 Commentary Check DO YOU HAVE EXAMPLES? ARE YOU SURE? Should:
WAIT! Look again: Show how the literary character/historical figure embodies certain qualities of your archetype (the ones you named in your claim or thesis). Connect the literary character/historical figure to the characteristics of the archetype with (specific) EXAMPLES from the book or their life Explain your example DO YOU HAVE EXAMPLES? ARE YOU SURE?

12 Mechanics Check. DO IT NOW.
The moment you’ve all been waiting for! Check for: Comma usage Plural vs. Possessive Capitalization of proper nouns Run-on sentences and sentence fragments Spelling Word choice that isn’t quite right Anything else you see Even if you aren’t sure, mark it. You know when something doesn’t look or sound quite right. You will double-check later

13 Language Register Check
Are you staying in formal register? Look back at notes to check. Use a pen or a pencil to circle any register drops and write “register” next to these circled areas. You may use personal pronouns like “I,” “me,” and “my.” Absolutely no “you” or “your” unless it is in one of the quotes you are using. CHECK AGAIN because a lot of you used YOU in the song analysis.

14 Now decide: Are you going to turn it in or revise it and turn it in tomorrow? If you have errors, REVISE. IF YOU TURN IN A PAPER WITH ERRORS IN FORMAT, SPELLING, CAPITALIZATION, OR GENERAL NONSENSE THAT SHOWS YOU JUST THREW SOMETHING TOGETHER JUST TO GET IT DONE, EXPECT A VERY POOR GRADE. Don’t waste my time.
