Here is the plan… Students will understand the extent to which East Asia is urbanized. Students will experience city life in the capitals of the 5 capitals of East Asia.

Japan Japan is about the size of California.
Total population is almost 128 million people. Ethnic makeup is almost entirely Japanese. Japan is a relatively “old” society – the median age is 46 years old.

Tokyo Japan is highly urbanized – over 91% of the population lives in cities. The capital of Tokyo (city and surrounding metropolis) is home to about 36 million people.

China China is slightly smaller than the United States of America by total land area. However, China’s population is about 4X the size of the USA’s – 1.3 billion. Most of that population is situated in the Eastern part of the country.

Beijing China is becoming more and more urbanized every year – currently the rate is a little over 50%. The capital city of Beijing has about million people.

North Korea North Korea has geographic strategic importance (borders Russia, China, and South Korea) but is also internationally isolated. North Korea is slightly larger than the state of Virginia – it has a total population of about 25 million people.

Pyongyang The capital city of North Korea is Pyongyang. Pyongyang is a “showcase” city designed to show the North’s success. North Korea has an urbanization rate of about 60%. Pyongyang is home to about 2.8 million people.

South Korea South Korea has a democratic system of government and a capitalist economic system. South Korea is slightly smaller than the state of Pennsylvania The total population of South Korea is about 49 million people.

Seoul The capital city of Seoul is home to just under 10 million people. South Korea is a very urbanized society – about 83% of the country lives in cites.

Taiwan Taiwan is about the combined size of the states of Delaware and Maryland. Taiwan is home to the “losers” of the Chinese Civil War that took place following WW2. The total population is about 23 million people.

Taipei Taipei is the capital city of Taiwan.
The city is located on the northern tip of the country along the Tamsui River. The population of Taipei is about 2.6 million people.
