3. How is tension and fear created in this scene? Tension is created by a close up shot of the shower head and a mid-shot of the leading lady in the shower. We are shown her perspective of the shower head and also are shown her vulnerable nakedness and enjoyment of becoming clean. For example, when she smiles and scrubs at her arms with soap. The cleansing here could symbolise her ridding herself of her sins, or it could foreshadow the director getting rid of his leading lady mid way through the film – something that was almost unheard of in the 1960’s. The shower is a place of vulnerability and by showing her enjoyment of showering the director hints at a sexual motive that is only ever suggested by the film. Overall, The audience grows tense because the character is vulnerable and also in a familiar situation. The audience therefore also feel vulnerable to attack and the happiness the character demonstrates makes us feel uneasy and highlights her downfall. We feel it could just as easily have been us. The music builds in volume, tempo and pitch and this makes the audience feel more stressed as we reach the murder. For example, the music that accompanies the character as she sits at the desk is much less frenetic than the music playing as she gets into the shower. Also, the pitch of the music seems to get higher and higher and this could be building up towards the screams of the murdered leading lady. In another example, when the music reaches the murder scene with a high pitched repetitive screeching, the music then seems to match the screams of the victim. It could also be said to be cutting through the air like the murderer’s knife.
