Summary of the Proposal In order to create the most professional law enforcement agency in the United States, it has been proposed that the Austin Police Department change the training of officers

It is proposed, that by educating inexperienced officers of APD’s resources, interacting sections, and investigative skills, the officer will gain valuable insight on how to solve crimes, deliver services and interact with the community in spite of the lack of experience

GOALS Enhance learning of inexperienced officers Participate with the community Reduce crime & increase quality of life Bring patrol and other APD entities together Instill a sense of enthusiasm & contribution from the officers

Street Experience Depleted Natural Attrition Retirement, injuries, discipline measures Decentralization Annexation New Units Change in law & policy that detectives rather than officers in specialized units - leaving one way path

Post Academy Training FTO training is meant to refine basics TCLOSE requirement - 40 hours every 2 yrs. Post academy training - none mandatory Any outside/additional training done is at the expense of the officer

Instruct In-depth view of the most frequent street crimes and different response to them Officers on how & why the separate sections work and their connection with each other with the officer being an integral part of the system Utilization of crime information i.e. crime analysis week in review, daily reports, directed patrols, BOLO’s, for patterns and suspects

Instruct Use of computer systems, specifically DEORS, ID MAIN, & CAD to assist with further in-depth identification of locations and suspects The importance of follow up after a crime. Including the benefits of visiting the locations and person’s victimized The documentation and communication before, during, and after any activity on part of the officer

GOALS Enhance learning of inexperienced officers Participation with the community Reduction of crime Bringing patrol and other APD entities together Enthusiasm & sense of contribution from the officers
